Like my lipstick, the color of dawn…

As I did last year I’m going to share some of my favourite beauty products from 2016. This is a little late going up, being that it’s now the end of January, but better late than never! This year I didn’t splurge too much, I stuck to a lot of what I know, so with that being said, I took the time to use up samples and look for less expensive alternatives to established faves.

1. Fresh Sugar Face Polish – I got this as part of the spa discovery trio, and I only recently opened this scrub. I found a refreshing scent, a gentle exfoliate, and a skin master. My skin looks great after using this scrub, not that I was surprised!

2. Burt’s Bees BB Cream – When I read that Burt’s Bees was releasing a BB I knew I had to try it! And I found myself loving it. All the essentials are there, the coverage is buildable, the formula light, the colour match great! And the best part is the price, I have spent a lot of money in the search of a great BB, and it can be found at your local Target!

3. Bobbi Brown Eye Cream – This is my first Bobbi Brown product experience and it’s not going to be the last, as I am with most eye creams, I don’t expect much going in, but this is right up there with L’Occatain Immortel Eye Balm.

4. Josie Maran Argan Oil – If there is one thing I love, it’s a face oil, I got this as a point perk from Sephora and in between switching up my skin care I decided to give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised, it’s a lightweight, well aborsbing oil, there’s no scent which is also nice, and it’s a little less expensive in comparison to my Fresh Seaberry oil, and there is also a jumbo size.

5. John Freida Sea Waves – very similar to the original from the late 90s early 00s. It enhances my natural waves and give great texture, all for a whole hell of a lot less than Bumble and Bumble Sea Salt Spray. And a lot more nostalgic for me too.

6. NARS Cruella – I’ve always been a red lippie sort of gal, but I, like many struggled to find the right shade and the confidence to pull it off. I have always been team NARS and this is no different. It’s rich deep red with a huge colour pay off, I rarely find myself reapplying. And I love this shade for Autumn/Winter, when deeper matte reds are in order.

7. Earthmama Angelbaby Nipple butter – about 6 months into my pregnancy there was a lot going on with my body, one strange thing that happened was my nipples were so dry that they were flaking.  Regular body lotion and cocoa butter did not work, this was the only product that did the trick. Also great for use on your elbows to smooth them.

8. Bumble and Bumble Invisible Hairdresser’s Oil Shampoo and Conditioner – I got both as a point perk and finally decided to try them, that was a mistake, because I love them and they are expensive! They both smell great, the shampoo makes my hair feel really clean, while the conditioner leaves my hair really soft and manageable. I prefer to use them before a blowout.

9. Water – Legit just drinking a shit ton of water. During this year alcohol and coffee were kept to ridiculously low minimums, and rightfully so, and water stepped up in a big way! Once I calculated how many ounces of water I drank and is was triple digits. It was summer and really hot.

10. Fresh lip balm – I got this as part of a holiday set I got at last year’s VIB Rouge sale and I freaking love it! I didn’t want to because of its steep for what it is price tag and because I have a million EOS lip balm eggs, but I will repurchase in the future. I love the lemony scent, you don’t find that with many Fresh products.

I’m looking forward to work through a lot of my beauty stash again this year and focus on skin care.  I’m looking forward to a healthier 2017, and little by little I will share my skin care and wellness progress.  And on that note it’s time to end!

All for now,

Good morning, sunshine, awake when the sun hits the sky…

I may have mentioned that I haven’t been feeling well the past few weeks and I thought maybe I should treat myself to some updated Spring clothes.  It’s been a long time since I bought anything, and even though a lot of my S/S clothes are in good condition, but having some more variety always helps, and the pieces I got are transitional and will mix and match very well with my current pieces.

I got two pairs of work pants, one black skinny or cigarette style (very Audrey Hepburn), the second navy, cropped with a cool bow detail at the waist.  I also picked up a pair of dark wash skinnies, I have been wanting a pair for a really long time now.  I also got a navy polka dot midi skirt, I am really loving them lately.  And I just can’t get enough.  I ordered a red, blue and ivory striped boat neck top, it’s the perfect addition to my stripped top collection, and my wardrobe.  I also got a Kelly green linen button front.  It’s going to match so many pieces I already own.  Of course all this came courtesy of J. Crew… No surprise there.  I find their clothing fits well, is of good quality as far as fast fashion goes, and really lasts a long time.

I can’t wait for my order to arrive, so I can mix and match all of these pieces with what I have.  I’m already thinking of so many super cute ensembles I can’t wait to share!  J. Crew is offering 25% off on Spring styles through 3/11, in stores and online, use code SHOPNOW.  Happy shopping, and on that note, it’s time to end!

All for now,

I hear the birds on the summer breeze…

After week one of my July 2015 capsule challenge (well, three days since the first was Wednesday), in conjunction with my low/no buy initiative; I feel it started well.  I started off nice and easy.  Pants (the chino and trouser variety) and sweaters were Wednesday and Friday, in the middle on Thursday I went with a button front blouse all three ensembles were coupled with cute summer shoes!

This weekend I plan to do some much needed laundry and put some items that I will not be wearing during this month away (mainly I don’t want to be tempted to wear them).  I will also take stock in what is clean and plan out my ensembles for the next week.

I wouldn’t say that I have “learned” anything yet from this experiment.  To me it feels as though I am just showcasing my favourite summer pieces.  I look forward to this week, I am hopeful that it will be an exciting chapter in my challenge.

Here is what I know so far (Yes, three days in):

  • My current Spring/Summer wardrobe consists of A LOT of red, white, blue, and black pieces.
  • Everything mixes and matches really well (I am still coming up with combinations and I only need to do this for a month!)
  • Skirts/Sundresses are the best! (not that I have worn any yet for my challenge).

And on that note, it’s time to end!  Stay tuned for more of my capsule challenge!

Get a little bit suburban and go crazy…

Over the weekend J and I watched a pretty interesting documentary called The True Cost, written and directed by Andrew Morgan, which is about the “Fast Fashion” industry and the effects it has on the world.  I mean it’s pretty much the ruination of the world.  So much of what was brought to light makes sense, yes consumerism and a booming economy can be good things, but this doc explores the costs of such things.  There is more than enough proof that many people’s well being and the future of the planet are being hindered.  Whether it’s over 1000 people dying in a garment factory collapse, pesticides being ingested from the farms that grow cotton to make fabric, the chemicals to dye fabric and tan leather, or even GMOs and the seed engineers to produce bigger and seemingly better plants. This is all in the name of cheap tee shirts and a better next quarter, the big guys, you know like H & M (I’m not buying the whole conscious collections thing), Zara, and Forever 21, among others reign supreme at bringing cheap clothing at unbelievable prices to make you think you need everything and keep you coming back.

As a self proclaimed fashionista I wasn’t surprised about what I learned I was more excited that someone had the balls to give a voice to a growing problem.  I am definitely more aware and can make a conscious effort to be a better consumer, and purchase in a more ethical way.  I know that my personal consumption more recently has been out of control.  I was already in the process of weening myself off of excessive buying.  I am on a mission for well made, quality items that I can love for years to come, instead of the cheap replaceable clothing I have purchased in the past because of price.  If I can find items that were made in America, or in a more ethical eco-friendly way then I intend to buy better, but less.  I may or may not still buy camis from Forever 21, they are soooo cheap and easy, but come in all the colours of the rainbow, the jury is still out for me.  Maybe only when my current camis are in such disrepair that I have to replace them.

For anyone that loves fashion, or is a super crazy consumerist I strongly urge you give this doc a try.  There were times that I was shocked, happy, sad and even yelled at my television.  Oh and for any of you out there who really hate Monsanto, there’s some bashing of them too.  A lot of this film just makes sense, I feel I couldn’t have watched it at a better time.  Between my low buy/no buy initiative, the shopping my closet kick I have been on, and the fact that I have way too many clothes already.  I really think everyone should watch it, let me know what you think.  And on that note it’s time to end!

But my dark side’s true…

So this month instead of a recap of what I am reading (which are the same books as last time! I’ve been busy…), I thought I might share some of the things I am working on.  I have quite the list so here goes!

1. Song/Poem ideas – I have been really inspired lately to write songs/poems recently.  I am by no means a singer, nor am I very good at writing music.  But the lyrics, they just flow through my veins and pour out of my soul.  I love music, it’s a really big part of my life (I bet you all couldn’t tell).  A lot of what I have been writing is pretty dark, pop-esque like LDR meets Kurt Cobain in a monotonous wasteland.

2. Ensemble posts with better pictures – I don’t know how these blogger chicks do it!  They look fab, have jobs, and families.  They still manage to look amazing, pose their butts off and have [seemingly] daily photo shoots!  I can’t manage to take selfies in a mirror that look good.  A lot of the better photos J took.  It’s a learning curve and I have accepted the challenge! #challengeaccepted

3. My novel – It’s still a work in progress.  I have been working on this thing for about 6-7 years now and all I have to show for it are 41 pages with almost 29,000 words.  Although I am proud of my accomplishment and I have some great bits that I can’t wait for readers to laugh out loud to, or cry or want to throw the book across the room, just to walk over after a deep breath to pick it up and continue reading.  I just feel that I should have been farther along than I am.  I know that I have only myself to blame.  And I did not write for a long time.  It has only been recently that I have been forcing myself to write.  Whether it’s a blog post, a song/poem, or a few paragraphs when I can fit it in to my schedule.  I have to keep my creative juices flowing so to speak.  I think I would feel better if I was closer to my goal.

4. Low buy/No buy resolution – I sort of think this one deserves it’s own post, and I know that I will be revisiting this in the future.  As you all know I love my beauty products, whether it’s skincare, make up, hair care, or tools.  If it’s sold at Sephora I probably want it.  If it’s Shiseido, Nars, Philosophy, Fresh, Mac, Make Up Forever, Benefit, Drybar, or Bumble and Bumble, it’s on my loves list.  I have a problem.  Hello, my name is Kiki and I am a beauty addict.  I need a support group.  And the sad part is I am no better when it comes to clothing.  And if it’s on sale there is a good chance I’m buying it.  2015 has been a year for experimentation.  I tried a lot of products so far and were just about half way through.  So I decided, after my last Sephora order of course, that for the rest of the year and going forward I am not buying random stuff to try, stuff that doesn’t work or is too expensive and more clothing I will never wear.  I came to this conclusion for a couple of reasons.  I almost had a heart attack when I opened my credit card bill, then I remembered what the charges were for…  My savings account is also in a very sorry state, like I didn’t need to spend $300-400 every time I ordered something from somewhere.  I am also pretty happy with my current routine, which I will share one of these days.  So I am only repurchasing what works as far as skincare, hair and beauty goes and when it comes to my wardrobe I am only investing in the highest quality items that I can afford to replace any old pieces that need to be replaced.  I will set a clear and concise budget and get back on the bandwagon and save some money!

Wow that was another long post, I’m sorry that was two in a row this week…  And on that note it’s time to end!
