Try the grey stuff it’s delicious!

For many months I have been waiting to see the new version of Beauty and the Beast, which is my favourite animated Disney film. The film just was released on Blu Ray, and I have had the best time watching it so I thought I would share my experience. When I was a little girl I longed to be Belle, and I mean how can you not? She was super smart, well read, a little sarcastic, takes not shit from the man, and she’s beautiful. She was definitely one of my idols growing up. She was the only brown haired princess during my formidable growing up years, as if I needed another reason for her to be my favourite!

When I read that Emma Watson was cast a Belle I was over the moon! I love her work and I think she has blossomed as a great actress, advocate and role model. Her portrayal is perfect, her singing safe, but even she’s admitted she’s not a singer. I was most looking forward for Dan Stevens as the Beast who is top notch, no one else could have done a better job. And I loved him in Downton Abbey and Legion.

The rest of the cast was excellent, I especially loved Stanley Tucci and Audra McDonald as Maestro Cadenza and Mme de Garderobe. The rest of the star studded cast includes Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellan, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline, Luke Evans and Josh Gad.

We all know the animated version, and I like the differences of the new version. The timeline makes a lot more sense, the villagers seem more cruel, the explanation of what happened to Belle’s mother is helpful. When Beast throws the snow boulder at Belle! The changes overall feel genuine, not too forced or out of sync.

The film has the same magic and granduer of the original with even more! For starters the castle looks amazing, like can I go live there please? Come on with that library! It’s the most wonderful thing I’ve ever seen. The village of Villenueve is perfect, it’s what I imagined it would look like in real life. The costumes are truly magnificent. Belle’s ball gown is TDF! And her celebration dress is simply divine. The CGI obviously looks amazing, the characters in their object form are so beautiful and ornate.

The music had the same feel and the new songs are really good. The magic of the “Be Our Guest” sequence is more than there.  My favourite would have to be the Beast’s song “Evermore”, I don’t know that I would break out in song after the love of my life has just left me, but hey, that’s Disney magic for you. And Emma Thompson’s rendition of “Beauty and the Beast” is so beautiful.

Over all it’s like one of my new favourite films! I’ve watched it a bunch of times already, and every time, it’s like the first time. I sing along to all of the songs and I’m quoting bits of the dialog. I just can’t get enough! And on that note it’s time to end!

You’ve taught me everything, without a poison apple…

I was thinking that I haven’t put a playlist up in a while, and hardly get time to really listen to a lot of music any more. If I’m lucky I can listen to a couple of songs on my lunch break, or when I am folding laundry.

  1. Roll To Me – Del Amitri
  2. Possum Kingdom – The Toadies
  3. The Set Up – Reel Big Fish
  4. The Impression That I Get – Mighty Mighty Bosstones
  5. Everything About You – Ugly Kid Joe
  6. No Rain – Blind Melon
  7. 1979 – Smashing Pumpkins
  8. Drain You – Nirvana
  9. Flagpole Sitta – Harvey Danger
  10. Your Boyfriend Sucks – The Ataris

I went 90s this time, and quite frankly I could have gone on and on and on, but I decided to keep it to a manageable number. I grew up in the 90s and so many of these songs were on the radio, or I discovered them in my teens and I was hooked. I’ve always been a rock fan, and the derivatives I most enjoy are Punk, Emo and Ska. There wasn’t really a lot of punk in the 90s. Emo was starting to become more and more mainstream, and Ska was in it’s heyday. The other day J was telling me that he was teaching himself how to play Drain You, which is super rad. And on that note, it’s time to end!

I will travel across the land, searching far and wide…

I like my millennial counterparts have been swept up in a resurgence of Pokemon fever thanks to Pokemon Go.  Needless to say I am a little addicted.  It’s basically the way the old Game Boy games should have been…  If the technology could have been a good at the time.

For those of you not in the know, Pokemon Go is a game that allows users to catch Pokemon in the real world using AR or Augmented Reality.  Which is pretty much the coolest, because Pikachu is right in front of you, or sitting next to you on the couch.

Now there have been many reports of people getting mugged, assaulted, car wrecks and even dead bodies being discovered.  Now, I don’t know what reports are legitimate but some scary stuff has happened as an on set of the game.  Here are some of my tips for playing safely, so you can catch them all!

  1. Don’t catch Pokemon and drive.  I can’t believe that in 2016 this is a foreign concept.  The point of the game is to find Pokemon in the world.  So put your phone down, park your car and go for a walk.  But if you must drive, pull over safely, or have a passenger play for you.
  2. Don’t play in areas you don’t know.  There is nothing worse then not knowing where you are and staring down at your phone that cost at least a couple hundred dollars.  This could be dangerous, you could be mugged, assaulted, or worse.  And also maybe don’t play alone.  Use the buddy system people!
  3. If playing at night wear light coloured clothing.  This would be the perfect time to break out that super old Pikachu tee, not only will it be very in, but the bright yellow allows you to be seen when it is dark.
  4. Look both ways before you cross the street. In fact maybe be alert at all times, and if you just can’t break away from your phone, maybe bring a friend who is not to keen on the game to be your eyes and ears so you can finally catch that Charizard.
  5. Have fun, that’s the point!

The other day I caught a Jigglypuff and it was super awesome!  I know I probably won’t catch all the Pokemon, but I enjoy the game.  Especially when better ones start showing up.  I, like many I am sure, are so over the Pidgeys, Weedles, and Rattatas.  But I do enjoy walking around and finding some cool stuff.  And on that note it’s time to end!

Take me to the Jersey Shore…

seasalt1I have mentioned numerous times that my childhood was spent by the beach.  And it was one of my favourite experiences.  I was at the beach from sun up to sun down, almost all year round.  During the Summer months I took pride in my killer tan (which I now seriously regret!), and my crazy wavy I literally spent all day at the beach hair.  You know, that piece-y, wavy, just the right amount of texture, that can’t be replicated easily –without a million products.

So I thought why not share my favourite sea salt and texture sprays from over the years.  For those days when taking a swim in the ocean is not an option, but you totally want to rock that “beach bum chic” look.

  1. John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves – This spray was my jam in middle school!  It was the only hair product that enhanced my wavy hair, that I didn’t fully understand how to control until my twenties.  It looked like I had spent all day at the beach, and I thought I looked effortlessly cool.  It smelled like coconut and sun screen, my favourite scents at the time.
  2. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray – Flash forward to 2008, I’m twenty, working and starting to enter the world of high end makeup and hair care.  This spray feels more like a texture spray than a wave enhancer, which I didn’t realize when I bought it initially.  But once I learned how to use it, I was hooked.  I typically use it to add texture to my hair after I curled it.
  3. Living Proof Instant Texture Mist – I discovered this spray in 2015, you know the year I made Rouge in April…  I had been using B&B Surf Spray for years at this point and been mainly happy with it.  But when I tried this after I chopped my hair really short I reached for this spray time and time again.  This spray made me feel like I finally achieved that effortless, “devil may care” attitude that I had so coveted in middle school.  Oh, how I missed Ocean Waves…
  4. Drybar Mai Tai Spritzer – I have been loving this brand since I discovered it in 2014.  From my Buttercup blow dryer, my curling iron to this spray.  This was one more product that I fell in love with.seasalt2

My journey through texture spray has been a long one.  I still have bottles of all four.  Depending on my mood, I will switch back and forth between them all.  Last year John Frieda brought back Ocean Waves, which has been renamed Sea Waves, it’s any nostalgic 90s kid’s dream.  The smell alone was the worth the wait.  What are some of your favourite sea salt or texture sprays?  And on that note, it’s time to end!

From an era we hate to admit we embrace…

It’s already the end of April, and that is pretty hard to believe!  I’ve been sitting here thinking about some of my favourite things over the past month and I think I have it narrowed down.  It’s going to be a short list is month because I am trying to get through my newly-ish acquired makeup/skincare and I have been working feverishly on posts.  Without further delay, my April favourite things!

1. Polishing my nails – I have gotten back on the nail polish bandwagon in a big way over the past few months.  I mainly stick to the classics: red, navy, black, coral.  But I have been experimenting with fun shades of nude, green (emerald, mint, and what Husband calls Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle green {Revlon Posh from 2014}), rose gold, sky blue, bubble gum pink, smoke and the occasional matte top coat.  While my polish collection grows and my hand steadies I get more and more obsessed.  Being in a professional position where I use my hands on the regular I have on average of two manis a week, just to keep the chips at bay.  While I have mainly been on the drugstore polish only, I more recently started adding some higher quality brands to the collection and I must say the investment is worth it.  I also opened up my Butter Tops and Tails set and so far (one mani down) I am in love, the base coat is matte and “nail colour” if that makes sense.  The top coat is high shine and dries quickly. I am eager to use the minis up and get full size (yes all after one use).  I also opened up my Formula X Clix set, I started with the nude colour, I only needed two coats to cover well (almost unheard of in my world). The formula (hehe #iprefermypunsintended) is smooth, consistent and highly pigmented. I would repurchase full size polishes for sure.

2. Origins Activated Charcoal mask – I picked this up about a month ago in hopes that it would replace GlamGlow SuperMud and it did in a big way!  As I’ve mentioned before Origins is quickly becoming on of my favourite brands (behind Fresh, Nars and Shiseido).  I use this mask at least once a week and it does wonders for clearing my pores, it’s a must try and much cheaper than SuperMud.

3. Castle – This show is amazing!  Nathan Fillion (swoon) and Stana Katic play Castle and Beckett, respectively.  Beckett is a no nonsense Homicide cop for the NYPD and Castle is a mystery writer who tags along.  I love this show for so many reasons!  Not to mention the constant comedic lines coming from Fillion, the twisted plots of the murder mysteries, and the sarcasm that Katic throws his way.  The nerd in my loves the literature references, the Firefly references, and the general euphoria I get from the show.

4. Fresh Off the Boat – This is the funniest show I have seen in a longtime!  I laughed the whole way through, and I’ve not yet finished the episodes that have aired.  Being a 90s kid, and my Husband a 90s teen we both enjoy the pop culture references, like the music, t.v. shows, the fashion (Jordans, starter jackets, Reebok pumps), childhood food like Capri Sun and Lunchables.  The nostalgia alone will keep you coming back, but the humor and heart will make you stay.
