Get a little bit suburban and go crazy…

Over the weekend J and I watched a pretty interesting documentary called The True Cost, written and directed by Andrew Morgan, which is about the “Fast Fashion” industry and the effects it has on the world.  I mean it’s pretty much the ruination of the world.  So much of what was brought to light makes sense, yes consumerism and a booming economy can be good things, but this doc explores the costs of such things.  There is more than enough proof that many people’s well being and the future of the planet are being hindered.  Whether it’s over 1000 people dying in a garment factory collapse, pesticides being ingested from the farms that grow cotton to make fabric, the chemicals to dye fabric and tan leather, or even GMOs and the seed engineers to produce bigger and seemingly better plants. This is all in the name of cheap tee shirts and a better next quarter, the big guys, you know like H & M (I’m not buying the whole conscious collections thing), Zara, and Forever 21, among others reign supreme at bringing cheap clothing at unbelievable prices to make you think you need everything and keep you coming back.

As a self proclaimed fashionista I wasn’t surprised about what I learned I was more excited that someone had the balls to give a voice to a growing problem.  I am definitely more aware and can make a conscious effort to be a better consumer, and purchase in a more ethical way.  I know that my personal consumption more recently has been out of control.  I was already in the process of weening myself off of excessive buying.  I am on a mission for well made, quality items that I can love for years to come, instead of the cheap replaceable clothing I have purchased in the past because of price.  If I can find items that were made in America, or in a more ethical eco-friendly way then I intend to buy better, but less.  I may or may not still buy camis from Forever 21, they are soooo cheap and easy, but come in all the colours of the rainbow, the jury is still out for me.  Maybe only when my current camis are in such disrepair that I have to replace them.

For anyone that loves fashion, or is a super crazy consumerist I strongly urge you give this doc a try.  There were times that I was shocked, happy, sad and even yelled at my television.  Oh and for any of you out there who really hate Monsanto, there’s some bashing of them too.  A lot of this film just makes sense, I feel I couldn’t have watched it at a better time.  Between my low buy/no buy initiative, the shopping my closet kick I have been on, and the fact that I have way too many clothes already.  I really think everyone should watch it, let me know what you think.  And on that note it’s time to end!

Summer’s in the air and baby, heaven’s in your eyes…

Summer is my favourite time for red, white, and blue pieces.  Looking like Miss [Fucking] America on the regular is pretty much my go to (aside from sundresses).  And with the Fourth just around the corner (or this weekend!), why not showcase some of my favourites?  There is just something nautical, preppy and very Americana about it, for obvious reasons.  Of course I wear red, white and blue throughout the year, but there is just something so special about it come summer time!  Whether your heading to the beach for the day, hanging with friends and family at a BBQ, or enjoying some fireworks in you area you really can’t go wrong with a very patriotic ensemble.  Here are some of my favourite pieces, some are old favourites, some a bit newer, and I can’t wait to share them with you all!  (BTW, I took photos, edited, and made this in like three hours, having never done most of the process before, I call that a win!) And on that note, it’s time to end.

Most of these pieces are last season and older, this summer I am shopping my closet, instead of buying new.

But my dark side’s true…

So this month instead of a recap of what I am reading (which are the same books as last time! I’ve been busy…), I thought I might share some of the things I am working on.  I have quite the list so here goes!

1. Song/Poem ideas – I have been really inspired lately to write songs/poems recently.  I am by no means a singer, nor am I very good at writing music.  But the lyrics, they just flow through my veins and pour out of my soul.  I love music, it’s a really big part of my life (I bet you all couldn’t tell).  A lot of what I have been writing is pretty dark, pop-esque like LDR meets Kurt Cobain in a monotonous wasteland.

2. Ensemble posts with better pictures – I don’t know how these blogger chicks do it!  They look fab, have jobs, and families.  They still manage to look amazing, pose their butts off and have [seemingly] daily photo shoots!  I can’t manage to take selfies in a mirror that look good.  A lot of the better photos J took.  It’s a learning curve and I have accepted the challenge! #challengeaccepted

3. My novel – It’s still a work in progress.  I have been working on this thing for about 6-7 years now and all I have to show for it are 41 pages with almost 29,000 words.  Although I am proud of my accomplishment and I have some great bits that I can’t wait for readers to laugh out loud to, or cry or want to throw the book across the room, just to walk over after a deep breath to pick it up and continue reading.  I just feel that I should have been farther along than I am.  I know that I have only myself to blame.  And I did not write for a long time.  It has only been recently that I have been forcing myself to write.  Whether it’s a blog post, a song/poem, or a few paragraphs when I can fit it in to my schedule.  I have to keep my creative juices flowing so to speak.  I think I would feel better if I was closer to my goal.

4. Low buy/No buy resolution – I sort of think this one deserves it’s own post, and I know that I will be revisiting this in the future.  As you all know I love my beauty products, whether it’s skincare, make up, hair care, or tools.  If it’s sold at Sephora I probably want it.  If it’s Shiseido, Nars, Philosophy, Fresh, Mac, Make Up Forever, Benefit, Drybar, or Bumble and Bumble, it’s on my loves list.  I have a problem.  Hello, my name is Kiki and I am a beauty addict.  I need a support group.  And the sad part is I am no better when it comes to clothing.  And if it’s on sale there is a good chance I’m buying it.  2015 has been a year for experimentation.  I tried a lot of products so far and were just about half way through.  So I decided, after my last Sephora order of course, that for the rest of the year and going forward I am not buying random stuff to try, stuff that doesn’t work or is too expensive and more clothing I will never wear.  I came to this conclusion for a couple of reasons.  I almost had a heart attack when I opened my credit card bill, then I remembered what the charges were for…  My savings account is also in a very sorry state, like I didn’t need to spend $300-400 every time I ordered something from somewhere.  I am also pretty happy with my current routine, which I will share one of these days.  So I am only repurchasing what works as far as skincare, hair and beauty goes and when it comes to my wardrobe I am only investing in the highest quality items that I can afford to replace any old pieces that need to be replaced.  I will set a clear and concise budget and get back on the bandwagon and save some money!

Wow that was another long post, I’m sorry that was two in a row this week…  And on that note it’s time to end!

Done my hair up real big beauty queen style…

I thought it was high time that I update y’all (I am so not from the South, but I find myself saying this all of the time) on my adventure using Wen.  So here’s the low down: When I let my hair air dry (which has been a lot this Summer) I get a lot of volume, which I don’t really need, but it lends well for second day hair.  When I blow dry my hair it.  Takes.  Forever.  I mean I have very short hair and it takes me like an hour to blow dry and style this mop!  Which I feel is way, way excessive.  I have to make sure that I have a good grip on my brush because if I don’t my hair ends up a giant puff ball.  But once I reach my desired result my hair looks great for about a day.  Second or third day hair is almost not an option.  Between the heat, humidity and whatever Wen has done to my hair and scalp my hair line is super greasy, like oil slick gross, but my hair is still really dry and it almost feels brittle.  My scalp also has a lot of build up, like it’s snowing on my shoulders and I can feel the build up when I wash my hair.  I think I need a deep conditioner or Head and Shoulders.  I don’t know if it’s the scent I am using (Fig), or just the formula that has made my hair and scalp react poorly.  I tried to shampoo prior to cleansing with Wen the other day and that made my scalp feel really clean, but my hair was frizzy as hell and it felt dry (that may have just been the fact that it was really humid that day).

I’m going to stick with it and hope that it gets better.  I feel it’s relevant to share that prior to cutting my hair back in November, I had my hair trained to only be washed about twice a week with the use of dry shampoo in between.  I’m trying to get back there, though it seems impossible now.  And dry shampoo isn’t really helping, if anything it makes my hair a dry puffy, frizzy mess.  It might just be the brand I am currently using (Herbal Essences).  So I decided to wash my hair with Wen everyday for about two weeks and slowly ween myself off.  Since trying this, it’s only been four days, I have been using four pumps (the instructions on the bottle suggest 16-24, which I think is way too much).  I massage it in to my scalp, dunk my head under the shower head, then massage a bit more, comb through and let it sit while I’m finishing my shower.  I then rinse and rinse and rinse and rinse.  Once I think I might be done rinsing, I turn the water to cold and rinse some more, my hair is bouncier, less frizzy and I think rinsing for what feels like twenty years is doing the trick.  I guess we’ll see how this works.  I mainly want to wash everyday to get through the cough syrup smell (I really hate it, I never thought figs smelled like cherry cough syrup).  And $79.00 is a lot to spend on something that is just okay.  Or if I end up really hating it, I will be even more disappointed.  I purposely read a lot of reviews and I saw first hand what it did for my Mother’s hair, so I thought it would be a good purchase.  But we will wait and see!

What are some of the more regrettable purchases you’ve made?  Could be beauty, clothing or otherwise.  I’d love to hear from you guys!  The only other regrettable purchase I can think of was Proactive, that stuff ruined my complexion, I could talk at length about my crummy experience with that stuff.  And on that note, it’s time to end!

I belong to a bygone era, like the Scarlett O’Hara…

Today J and I had the day off so we decided to head up to Albany to the Crossgates mall.  I did so browsing at J. Crew, Coach, Forever 21 and Banana Republic.  While at BR I found this adorable dress that was marked down to $15.99, which is a steal!  I found a petite 8 and figured I’d give it a go.  I’m usually between a 4-8, depending on the brand and fabric (#bustygalprobs).  I was very happy this dress fit very well, the fabric is very soft and stretchy, and marked down from $130, what’s not to love!  Well, at the register the guy that rung me out said $9.97, I was floored!  I got out of there so quickly because I felt like I stole it!  I got a $130.00 dress for under $10!  I can not wait to wear this dress, all the time!  I can think of a few was to wear this dress already and I haven’t even owned it for 24 hours!

After my steal, J and I walked ourselves to World of Beer for some lunch.  J had an Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break and I had a Keegan Ales Joe Mama’s Milk.  Both were quite good.  We both like dark beer.  I had fish and tots for lunch, I couldn’t even finish all of them.  Napoleon Dynamite would have been disappointed in me for not saving them for later.  J had a BBQ burger.  After lunch we decided to head home.  Which was smooth sailing on the Thru-Way.  Our afternoon has been a lazy one.  I checked out the new Pottermore moments, I haven’t finished a couple of them (I can’t figure them out for the life of me), and J has been playing his new Batman game that came out today.  We might go to dinner with MIL to celebrate J’s birthday, but I don’t know what she has in mind and it’s been raining on and off all day.   And on that note, it’s time to end.
