From an era we hate to admit we embrace…

It’s already the end of April, and that is pretty hard to believe!  I’ve been sitting here thinking about some of my favourite things over the past month and I think I have it narrowed down.  It’s going to be a short list is month because I am trying to get through my newly-ish acquired makeup/skincare and I have been working feverishly on posts.  Without further delay, my April favourite things!

1. Polishing my nails – I have gotten back on the nail polish bandwagon in a big way over the past few months.  I mainly stick to the classics: red, navy, black, coral.  But I have been experimenting with fun shades of nude, green (emerald, mint, and what Husband calls Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle green {Revlon Posh from 2014}), rose gold, sky blue, bubble gum pink, smoke and the occasional matte top coat.  While my polish collection grows and my hand steadies I get more and more obsessed.  Being in a professional position where I use my hands on the regular I have on average of two manis a week, just to keep the chips at bay.  While I have mainly been on the drugstore polish only, I more recently started adding some higher quality brands to the collection and I must say the investment is worth it.  I also opened up my Butter Tops and Tails set and so far (one mani down) I am in love, the base coat is matte and “nail colour” if that makes sense.  The top coat is high shine and dries quickly. I am eager to use the minis up and get full size (yes all after one use).  I also opened up my Formula X Clix set, I started with the nude colour, I only needed two coats to cover well (almost unheard of in my world). The formula (hehe #iprefermypunsintended) is smooth, consistent and highly pigmented. I would repurchase full size polishes for sure.

2. Origins Activated Charcoal mask – I picked this up about a month ago in hopes that it would replace GlamGlow SuperMud and it did in a big way!  As I’ve mentioned before Origins is quickly becoming on of my favourite brands (behind Fresh, Nars and Shiseido).  I use this mask at least once a week and it does wonders for clearing my pores, it’s a must try and much cheaper than SuperMud.

3. Castle – This show is amazing!  Nathan Fillion (swoon) and Stana Katic play Castle and Beckett, respectively.  Beckett is a no nonsense Homicide cop for the NYPD and Castle is a mystery writer who tags along.  I love this show for so many reasons!  Not to mention the constant comedic lines coming from Fillion, the twisted plots of the murder mysteries, and the sarcasm that Katic throws his way.  The nerd in my loves the literature references, the Firefly references, and the general euphoria I get from the show.

4. Fresh Off the Boat – This is the funniest show I have seen in a longtime!  I laughed the whole way through, and I’ve not yet finished the episodes that have aired.  Being a 90s kid, and my Husband a 90s teen we both enjoy the pop culture references, like the music, t.v. shows, the fashion (Jordans, starter jackets, Reebok pumps), childhood food like Capri Sun and Lunchables.  The nostalgia alone will keep you coming back, but the humor and heart will make you stay.

I wish it was Sunday, ‘Cause that’s my funday…

B. up to bowl, I’m next!

Sunday was a fun and busy day, my coworkers and I went bowling, we had such a blast!  I am officially the worst bowler, the kids, did better than me, even with the ball slide and the bumpers.  I did manage to get two strikes and a bunch of spares.  But, I, Kiki am the gutter ball Queen!  A bunch of us were able to bowl two games, have some food, beers and even some cake.  We chased the kids around (they are slippery little suckers)!  It was fun, though I was tired after, I don’t know how children have so much energy!  Even after two cups of coffee, I could not keep up!

My supervisor also announced that she is having a baby girl later this summer!  It was cute how we announced the gender, we had chocolate cake with white butter cream outside and purple frosting inside (she likes purple better than pink).  I’m excited because she’s due in September, and September babies are the best.  In addition to bowling I had the pleasure of hanging out with my mom for a bit.

Only my Mother would wear a coat to bowl.
Chillin’ between turns!
We had brunch, which consisted of coffee and treats from Starbucks, the vanilla bean scones they had Sunday were to die for!  Then after bowling we went to Macy’s and she got a Calvin Klein dress on sale and a sweater (I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…).  I got these cool Tommy Hilfiger chinos, and the color is called Formula One?  Sold!  I had been wanting red or rose chinos for a while now, and I’m glad I could get them on sale.  Chinos are my go to for work or play, they go with everything and are a breeze to style.  Then once I got home I bit the bullet and ordered myself a camera, because taking photos with my old iphone4 is such a chore.  It should be arriving soon, and I couldn’t be more excited.  And on that note it’s time to end!

M and Z, she said she was the baby whisperer! Too cute!

 All for now,
Kiki

Spring keeps you ever close…

Today I opened up my Shiseido essence, and after one use I like how it makes my skin feel, it smells a little weird, but I think I will get used to it, we’ll see how it goes. I want to give it some time before I form any real opinions, or do a review. I got motivated a washed my make up brushes, I really needed to clean them. I love using clean fluffy brushes, and I know they are better for my skin, but I am not always good about cleaning them. I’m glad I finally did. I also did a little organizing, my make up and skincare has pretty much taken over my life. While I am still trying to sort through, weed through, and find skin care for my twenty-something skin I have amassed quite a collection, which is strewn across my dresser, in the bathroom, and in a box on the floor of my bedroom. I made the decision to only repurchase what works next year and use up what I have. And I am almost certain that besides foundation, mascara, and maybe pressed powder I can make the rest of my make up last.

I planned out some super adorable ensembles for this upcoming week, and I was thinking either navy or the new deep red from the CLIX set. Since I average two manis a week I may do both. I’m also working on a few other things, stay tuned. And on that note, it’s time to end.

All for now,

I need the smell of summer…

This week has been a long week (#TFGIF)! This weekend should be full, between work on Saturday, house work, washing my make up brushes, post planning, ensemble planning, picture taking, and then bowling with my coworkers Sunday. Wow, I’m tired already! When a typical weekend that involves work is pretty much lost because I stay up too late Saturday night and sleep in too late Sunday, Husband and I go to lunch and then we veg out for the rest of the day. I might do a little house work, or my nails but I never feel accomplished. This stops now! I will make the most of my days and nights to be a more productive part-time blogger.

After my day off on Wednesday and all I got accomplished I (Finally at 26 almost 27) realized the power of waking up early and cramming as much as you can into one day. I planned posts, took pictures, cleaned, did my hair, nails, did a wee bit of shopping. I mainly plan my posts either on my phone note or in a notebook I carry in my purse everywhere I go. My process is admittedly a little erratic. I write everything down, either in the aforementioned notebook or on my phone. I sit trying to perfect my quip-y one liners and scour lyrics pages to find the perfect title. I hit my goal of posting every post I wanted to in April! I am super proud of that. I have been setting little goals for my self as long as I can remember, although I am not A-type at all or even super competitive, I love setting a goal, reaching that goal, and then making a new even harder goal. Other recent goals include posting more to Instagram, I am not so great at putting up pics, but more recently I have been really good about posting. I think it has more to do with my terrible vision and my poor photography skills. Embracing my currently subscribed social media (I’m good with twitter, I’m slowly getting better with Instagram, and Facebook lost my interest). Saving money (I know this one is a stretch, I made Rouge last week) but it’s important, especially when you own a home that is 100 years old (More on that another time, but 2015 is the centennial!)

All in all I’m looking forward to this weekend and the upcoming week, Next Friday is already May, and I have some fun planned, my next hair cut and my MIL’s puppy she raised for Guiding Eyes is graduating and will become a big, bad guide dog in his own right! Stay tuned, and on that note it’s time to end.

All for now,
Kiki

Ladies are combing their hair…

I may or may not have mentioned that I am going the first weekend in May for a new hair cut. I’m  thinking a little shorter for S/S15, my lob grew out past my collar bone (this is since November, my hair grows really fast). Now I am well into medium hair territory. I must say that I still really love having short hair, sometimes I miss my long #Middletoninspired hair, but for the spring ans summer it is just too easy and I feel should be celebrated. I can not wait to get this mop trimmed. I’m most definitely thinking bangs this time round, and my hair dresser will not talk me out of it! I also want the front section to be angled, and some short layers throughout so my hair will avoid that awkward/silly bell shape wavy/frizzy hair like mine takes on when not tamed. I will never have “wash and go” hair, but I can fake it (it takes awhile, but dammit, I can do it). I know with shorter hair I won’t be able to put it up in a ponytail anymore and I will need to trim my bangs frequently. But all I can think of is how cute a Coco Chanel/Anna Wintour meets 1970s punk bob will look with my sundresses and pink sandals. Keep the texture and sea salt spray in hand… It’s going to be a bumpy road! Here are some images that I think most closely resemble what I want to accomplish with this cut:

The first is a little more polished, but still super chic and also a little edgy (Like Westwood and McQueen). I want my bangs to be heavier, more like the second photo. With the right products I can easily recreate this look. The second is more what my hair would look like on a daily basis with how my hair is. I would not have to do very much, a little blow drying, some sea salt or texture spray, maybe mousse, and some hair spray, and my good old curling iron.

Keep on the lookout for new hair pics, I’m planning some fun posts for next month, so stay tuned. And on that note it’s time to end.

All for now,
Kiki
